Be careful what you wish for…In 2007 Jen Anthony overheard a grandchild ask his grandfather, “What would you do if you had unlimited time and money?” The grandfather, a life-long basketball player, coach, and fan, responded, “I’d drive from New York to Los Angeles and replace worn-out basketball nets in every school and park along the way.” Armed with that remark, she applied her legal expertise in estate management and the IRS to form Nets On The Run, Inc. After forming the corporate structure and obtaining the IRS determination, Jen gave this organization to him (her husband, Lee Anthony) as a birthday gift later that year.

Nets On The Run, Inc., or “Nets”, is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 public charity committed to encouraging healthy lifestyles and the improvement/upkeep of public facilities (primarily basketball courts). The name is derived from Lee’s love of basketball and the couple’s prior addiction to long distance running. Nets provided modest but steady support to numerous public facilities along the San Antonio/Austin corridor from 2008 – 2018. Upon Lee’s semi-retirement from The Intellekt Group in 2018, it was reenergized and now sponsors organize quarterly events throughout the area. These events are as simple as park clean-up (three in the past nine months) or as complex as providing traffic safety and entertainment for ~50,000 people in the semi-annual Siclovía in San Antonio. Nets currently replenishes basketball nets for three separate San Antonio school districts and has supported competitive events such as the local Alpha Warrior Team Tough Project and the inaugural 25th Air Force Reunion 5K run. Nets enthusiastically provides community service and résumé building opportunities for both adults and juveniles. It currently has over 150 San Antonio-based members on its public Facebook site (Nets On The Run, Inc.), with a regular volunteer contingent of 12 – 25 people who work at each event.

Nets On The Run has no salaried employees and operates solely on a volunteer basis. Every donated dollar is used exclusively to support the defined mission and each expenditure is collectively approved by the Board of Directors. As a 501(c)3, all donations are tax-deductible. Nets is not an organization that employs the simple cliché of “raising awareness” – it is a body of committed volunteers who take action to make a difference in the community, and who collectively want to serve as a “tipping point” by encouraging others to be active in meaningful public service. Nets On The Run welcomes all donations regardless of amount, but more importantly, the group welcomes your time, volunteer spirit, and service to the community! Contact Lee Anthony via e-mail ( or snail mail (127 Burr Road #1 San Antonio, TX 78209) with your questions, input, or donations.

Responsiveness is the Key to Building Relationships

According to the recent “State of the Union” address, there will be Government cuts, however DOD and Homeland Defense will not be affected as the intent is to create more jobs. That has the potential to translate into more contracts. Though more contracts do not necessarily mean more growth. A company must be responsive to build the relationships necessary to succeed and grow.

Adult Language Learning: Acquisition and Maintenance

Learning a language as an adult provides unique challenges to every learner. While many methods exist, from Rosetta Stone® to Defense Language Institute courses, each one offers its own advantages and disadvantages. As children, we naturally pick up language at a rapid pace, but this ability begins to fade around age six, and decreases dramatically after adolescence. Due to this change in learning abilities, we need to acknowledge the importance of tailoring language study specifically for adults.

Industry News – The Air Force’s Future Operating Concept

At the end of FY 2015, the Air Force issued its Future Operating Concept to the public, the latest in a series of strategic concepts to help guide the organization over the next twenty years. The main concept? Operational Agility. In short, “In 2035, the USAF will leverage operational agility as a way to adapt swiftly to any situation or enemy action. Operational Agility is “the ability to rapidly generate and shift among multiple solutions for a given challenge.” This will deliver Global Vigilance—Global Reach—Global Power in support of national security, accomplished through Multi-Domain Command and Control, a combination of air, space, and cyberspace capabilities.
